Franking Label(s) - Strip of 4 x 55c
These self-service kiosks that offer customers a convenient one stop shop for some standard service postal requirements - were introduced on Monday, 21 July 2008. Manufactured by the German Engineering Corporation, Wincor Nixdorf, the Service Centre is touch screen and allows a customer buy one or multiple franking labels, weigh items, select a destination (national or international) and post items. The Service Centre accepts coins, notes and credit / debit cards as payment. A Postbox is placed beside each Postal Service Centre and mail is collected daily at each location. The pilot Postal Service Centre will be located in the Dublin Airport from July 21 onwards. There will be a further five Service Centres in the pilot scheme, the locations of which will be listed on our website
www.irishstamps.ie. Pending the success of the pilot, it is the intention of An Post to rollout these machines nationwide.
The Service Centre issues franking labels, with designs based on the Inland Waterways commemorative stamp issue of 20 October, 2006. Featuring photography by Walter Pfeifer, the labels feature four inland waterways; The River Barrow, The River Erne, The River Shannon and The Grand Canal, which link Ireland from North to South and East to West.
Collectors will be interested to know that the franking labels are printed on special barrier coated thermal paper, with a permanent water soluble adhesive. The four Inland Waterways images appear on the left-hand side of the labels (one image per label), with the right hand side of the label being available for the postage paid amount and other data. The data appears on two lines - the top line (eg A230) represents the Year of Issue of labels (eg A is Year 1 - 2008) and the Gregorian date (eg 230) - the number of the day in that year (with January 1 as Day 1). The line below (eg 0250001) is broken down into two segments, with 0250 representing the Philatelic Bureau, Dublin and 001 being the unique Postal Service Centre machine identifier.
To Commemorate the introduction of these service centres a special First Day Cover and a strip of four x 55c labels will be available for collectors. These labels will only be available from the Philatelic Bureau denominated at 55c and featuring only the Gregorian date for first day of issue, 21 July, as part of the data. No other dates or rates will be available from the Bureau and they will not appear in the Annual Collections - Year Book, Year Pack and First Day Cover Collection. The Franking Labels and First Day Cover were designed by Steve Simpson.
